Phillips

Phillips family crest

Phillips is the maiden name of our maternal grandmother, Thelma Phillips (1906-2002) who married Edward James Rogers in 1932. The sequence of surnames in the two generations between us goes Phillips-Rogers-Dwyer.

The surname Phillips derives from the male given name Phillip, with the trailing ‘s’ denoting ‘son of’. The place of origin of the Phillips family has not been established, but all known Phillips ancestors were from the London area prior to the emigration of George Phillips (1828-1891) to Australia.

The Phillips line can be traced back with certainty to William Phillips (1759-1827), a fourth great grandfather (six generations back). William’s parentage, however, has been difficult to confirm, although I have included details of his probable parents, Joseph and Catherine, and possible grandparents, Joseph and Martha.
